All flights in Northern Europe cancelled due to volcanic ash

I got up at 5 this morning since I was going to go to Sweden today, but when I got to Stansted I found out all flight have been cancelled due to the volcano eruption in Iceland. Though I didn’t find this for many hours. When I got there, more than half of the flight had been cancelled, but ours wasn’t one of them. So we sat there, feeling lucky, eating our overpriced airport breakfast, after already having checked in our baggage and gone through security. Then when the gate number was announced, we started walking, and even then it hadn’t been cancelled. Halfway to the gate it got cancelled, together with all the remaining flights.

We’ve booked new tickets to Sweden for Saturday now, hopefully the ashes will have cleared by then, but it’s hard to tell. It looks like the flights will be cancelled tomorrow too..

According to BBC over 4000 flights in Northern Europe have been/will be cancelled just today. Even if there would be only 100 passengers per flights, we’re talking 400 000 people.
